HIGHLIGHTS

Everyone knows Medjugorje, but do you know that there are also many other interesting pilgrimage sites in the Balkans? We have prepared a selection of the most important pilgrimage destinations and sacred places of worship which have significant importance in the hearts of the people.

Marija Bistrica

Marija Bistrica is the most important pilgrimage place in Croatia, and it is visited by hundreds of thousands every year. In 1545 a local priest hid the wonder-working statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus from the Turks and the statue was discovered again almost 50 years later. The records say that light shone, and this is how it was discovered.

Brezje

The Basilica of St Mary Help of Christians is a Slovenian National Marian Shrine. It is the site of several miraculous healings and is the most important religious place in Slovenia. From White Sunday to All Saints’ Day, a procession of candles takes place as a sign of gratitude and devotion.

Perast

There aren’t many churches as breathtaking as Our Lady of the Rocks. It is built on a tiny islet deep in UNESCO-protected Kotor Bay and is only accessible by boat. Local seamen found an icon of St Mary and laid a stone there every time they made a safe passage back home. Over time, an islet emerged from the sea, and the habit of throwing stones is still very much present today.

Ptuj

On a scenic hill near Ptuj, halfway between Austrian Graz and Croatian Zagreb, is a popular pilgrimage place: the Church of Our Lady of Protection. It is a pearl of Gothic architecture centered around a spectacular relief of the Virgin Mary protecting 82 figures in need of protection and money.
